We were treated to a terrific Zoom presentation by Antony Zacharias, renowned Long Exposure photography expert.

It was a hugely captivating talk based largely on the teachings in his book “Mastering Long Exposure” and covered various techniques for use during both day and night photography.

These ranged from the tools and preparation to increase sky drama, particularly in the “blue hour” and to enhance architectural photography, to the more fun techniques used to smooth flowing waters, adding Astrophotography components into our photos; as well as a fascinating insight into the increasingly popular realm of Intentional Camera Movement.

Antony also gave us some great insights into using different neutral density filters and a host of tips and tricks to maximise prospects for capturing images that put a different twist on classic sights.

We had to admire his stamina, as it was a full 2 hour presentation packed-full of content and good humour.

I am sure many of those attending ( a good turnout too!) will be inspired to venture forth and undertake more long exposure photography assignments – our eyes were certainly opened to the possibilities.”

“Hot off the press, at our last meeting on Thu 3 Nov we held an internal challenge competition on the theme of “Castles”.

There were some terrific entries featuring both local castles (Tantallon was an understandable favourite) plus several further afield at locations like Holy Island, Bamburgh and the Highlands.

Val Stuart’s stunning entry capturing Eilean Donan lit up for Remembrance Day last year was the worthy winner, pictured above, with a good number “highly commended” too.

Dougie Allan from Beeslack Penicuik Camera Club assessed all entries, providing useful feedback that our new members will no doubt appreciate.

The key advice was the importance of staying focused on the competition subject.

Thanks to Dougie too for his entertaining tales of exploits with flying drones!

The club welcomed Karen Thorburn back as a guest speaker, following her previous photography presentation to the club in 2019.

Karen gave us a thoroughly involving and enjoyable talk over Zoom, covering her landscape, wedding, family and commercial photography portfolios in addition to her personal project to recreate many of her childhood photographs captured throughout Scotland.

It was exhausting just imagining all the different aspects to her work. Incredible! Members certainly had their eyes opened in regard to how much preparation goes into a wedding or commercial shoot. It was also refreshing to hear about her approach to photography…. taking time and thinking the images through beforehand.

Our first assignment theme was All from a Mobile when members submitted their best mobile phone images to the scrutiny of their colleagues.

Cheese & wine. After a Covid gap of more than two-years we’re back with a well-attended fun opening night. We welcomed a few new faces too.

On 22-Sep Rich Dyson gave an excellent talk on Myth Busting Photography.
